Food Coloring

It's science fair season at the elementary school.  Jordyn did her project with her bff McKayla.  They decided to test whether adding food coloring to food will change the flavor.  They decided to test this theory by making vanilla cupcakes.  Some with coloring and others without.  The first part of the project, actually making and testing the cupcakes they completed within days of the assignment.  Kayla's mom was gracious enough to let the two of them have free reign over the cooking.  I don't think I would have been as easy-going so it was a win-win in my book.  After the initial baking day the project got put on the back burner although I was aware the project was due on February 3rd.  Last week Melanie (Kayla's mom) and I emailed each other a few times to figure out when we could get the girls together to finish making their board.  We have two very busy girls so it was hard arranging the date.  We thought we had plenty of time until on February 1st both Jordyn and Kayla approached us basically saying, "Ummmm...they're due tomorrow!  What are going to do?"  That's when scramble mode set in.  Luckily I had already purchased the cardboard for the display.  At about 9:30 p.m. Melanie and Kayla arrived and we all pitched in putting the board together while jamming/singing to Taylor Swift.  I had some bright pink wrapping paper we used for the display and Kayla brought a stash of paper she had at home and magically they worked together.  The girls typed up what they wanted to say.  I made a few edits but mostly left it how it was.  Melanie cut pictures and borders while the girls colored and put together their board.  The final touch was a "heart attack" which cracked up me and Melanie.  There was absolutely question that two 10 year old girls were the designers of this board!  The girls had so much fun and said they would always remember this night.  We finished a couple minutes before midnight and they were able to go home so we could all get some sleep.  They didn't place but Jordyn told me she didn't think they would but they still had fun working on it.  It was also fun for me to get to know Melanie better.  McKayla is a great girl and I'm really happy she and Jordyn have become such close friends this year.
